ACCEND stands for: Aspirant Cancer Career and Education Development Programme.
Cancer is a complex and significant disease. It will affect 1 in 2 of us during our lifetime and it is estimated there will be 4 million people living with cancer diagnosis by 2030. Cancer is also the most common cause of death in the UK (CRUK 2021)
The NHS cancer workforce is under pressure. Unless we act, we risk being without right number of health care professionals with right skills, knowledge, and capabilities at the time when diagnosis, treatment and management of cancer are becoming more complex with the advancement of science, genetics and technology.
UK wide ACCEND career pathway, Core Cancer Capabilities in practice and education framework gives structure with key definition of the knowledge, skills and behaviours for each practice levels required by all nurses and AHPs caring for people affected by cancer. It gives guidance on education, direction and solutions the cancer workforce needs now and into the future.
