April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
Bowel cancer is the UK’s fourth most common cancer but if diagnosed at the earliest stages, bowel cancer is treatable and curable. For cancer screening to be effective, it is important that uptake is high.
April is bowel cancer awareness month and the SWAG Cancer Alliance have been actively involved with the development and funding of two bowel cancer screening campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the changes to bowel cancer screening eligibility.
Bowel Cancer Screening Awareness Campaign – South West 2025
We have collaborated with the South West Regional Vaccination & Immunisations team, Peninsula Cancer Alliance and NHS Creative to improve uptake in the South West.
Our bowel cancer awareness campaign aims to raise awareness that the eligible age has reduced from 60 to 50 years old. It will commence mid-March 2025 with a particular focus through to the end of April 2025 to align with Bowel Cancer Awareness month.
The campaign will be featured through targeted social media advertising including Facebook, Spotify and Google Display.
Some of the largest sports, leisure and retail facilities across the South West have agreed to display our posters so look out for them when you’re out and about and let us know when you spot one. Click here for the Campaign Toolkit
BNSSG #RememberWhen
BNSSG applied to SWAG Cancer Alliance for funding to run a campaign to encourage increased uptake of bowel cancer screening. The campaign uses local nostalgia for iconic items and events to capture the attention of people aged between 50-74 and to encourage people to take the test when it arrives in the post.
These included the invention of the Walkman and the Raleigh Chopper bike; The Beatles performing in Weston-Super-Mare in 1963, and the last Concorde being built in Bristol in 1979.
The team worked with North West Cancer Research utilising key insights following the success of a campaign they designed and ran across Cheshire & Merseyside.
The #RememberWhen campaign was launched on World Cancer Day (4 February 2025).
Details of the campaign can be seen on the BNSSG website. #RememberWhen
