Increasing Cancer Awareness for the Chinese speaking community

On 10th March, the Increasing Cancer Awareness for the Chinese speaking community event was held in Bath.

This was a collaboration between the Chinese Community Wellbeing Society (CCWS) and SWAG Cancer Alliance, funded by the latter.

The aim was to promote the early diagnosis of cancer by raising awareness that early detection can save lives and lead to better treatment outcomes. We shared information about cancer and cancer screening to ensure the community knew what screenings they were eligible for, when they would take place, and how they would be contacted.

In line with the ongoing NHS Help Us Help You campaign, we urged the community to act without delay when they received screening invitations. We encouraged them to be more aware of their bodies, speak up, and contact their GP practice if they had concerns.

A cancer patient and a carer shared their impactful stories, and a team of local volunteers, including a retired GP, nurse, and pharmacist, recounted their experiences with cancer patients 30–40 years ago, highlighting how cancer treatment and outcomes have evolved over time.

We ended the day with some role play and we hope that by acting out key scenarios, we reinforced our messages and left a lasting impression on the community.
